How Safe is Your Gym?
Gym Safety
Safety is a primary concern in schools today. Spalding, one of the leading gym equipment manufacturers, has teamed up with the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) to establish a program called the GYM DOCTOR to address this concern. The GYM DOCTOR is a gymnasium equipment safety evaluation tool designed to help keep students, athletes, coaches and spectators as safe as possible.
The Gym Doctor is a Free evaluation program that covers the following areas:
Basketball Equipment
Volleyball Equipment
Gym Wall Padding
Additional gymnasium areas that should also be inspected include:
Folding Partition/ Curtains
Bleachers Indoor/ Outdoor
Batting Cages
Ropes/Cargo Nets
Lockers
It is recommended by both the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the New York State SED that these areas be inspected on an annual basis. YES, Inc. has been selected and registered as an official New York State Spalding GYM DOCTOR representative. YES can perform these inspections within the guidelines of Spalding's Gym Doctor Program, adding in the additional areas to be inspected. The Gym Doctor Safety Evaluation is performed FREE OF CHARGE to all who request it. As a result of the evaluation your district will be presented with a written report documenting the condition of your facility and, if necessary, recommendations to make it as safe as possible.
About NFHS - National Federation of State High School Association
The Indianapolis-based National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) leads the development of education-based interscholastic sports and fine arts activities that help students succeed in their lives. The NFHS sets directions for the future by building awareness and support, improving the participation, experience, publishing official rules, establishing consistent standards for competition, and helping the member state associations and professionals who oversee sports and activities in approximately 18,500 high schools with 11 million participating students.

Spalding is the official basketball supplier of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), the official backboard of the NBA and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the official net systems supplier of USA Volleyball. Spalding worked in conjunction with the NFHS to specifically increase the level of safety in all athletic facilities by initiating the free Gym Doctor program.
