Law named to Cuomo mandate team.
Long Island Association President Kevin Law has been named to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's 23-person "Mandate Relief Redesign Team,"which will be chargedwith reviewing existing unfunded and underfunded mandates imposed on taxing districts.
Law is the only representative from Long Island on the team, which
includes representatives from multiple fields such as government,
education and labor. The team held its first meeting Friday. Cuomo
participated via conference call, and laid out his ideas for the group,
which he said should look at ways to reduce the costs of mandated
programs, identify mandates that are ineffective and outdated, and
determine how school districts and local governments can have a greater
ability to control expenses.
Cuomo said he hopes for a first set of recommendations from the
group by March 1 so that they can be considered
for the 2011-12 budget process.
